課程概述 |
This class will examine a number of urgent issues at the intersection of law and public health, particularly those that involve a conflict between the rights of individuals and the well-being of the community. Rather than being wedded to a particular approach to public health or field of legal doctrine, we will use a case study approach to analyze US and international conflicts over (and regulation of) issues such as tobacco/e-cigarettes, sugary drinks, pandemics/vaccines, opioids, surrogacy, informed consent, blood safety, and more.

課程目標 |
This course will examine a number of urgent issues at the intersection of law and public health, particularly those that involve conflicts between the rights of individuals and the well-being of the community. Rather than being wedded to a particular field of legal doctrine, we will use a case study approach to analyze US (and some international) conflicts over (and regulation of) infectious disease quarantine, vaccination, junk food, tobacco, and auto accidents. |

課程要求 |
Requirements:
1. Attendance: Students are required to attend all course sessions.
2. Group Work: Each day, students will be placed in groups of 5-6 people, and they must engage in an exercise based on the cases and readings. Each group will have to efficiently present their resolution of the exercise to the class. All students are required to participate by both contributing to group discussion and presenting to the full class.
3. Exam: Final grades will be based on your attendance, group work, and performance on the final examination, which will be involve a 60 minute essay based upon the work we have done in class.
